"Watch the ETH/BTC ratio — it's a signal of a revival of crypto." — Tom Lee, Fundstrat Global Advisors, July 13 post ahead of WebX 2026 keynote
Ether gained 11% over seven days through July 16, 2026, reaching $1,920, while Bitcoin rose 4% over the same stretch. The divergence coincided with a reversal in U.S. spot Ether ETF flows: $84.4 million in net inflows for the week ending July 11 broke an eight-week outflow streak, followed by an additional $96 million across the next three trading sessions. BlackRock's ETHA captured the vast majority of those flows — $45.3 million of a $53.8 million daily total on one session, $58.3 million of $58.4 million on another.
The contrast with Bitcoin ETFs is stark. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs posted their longest outflow streak on record — eight consecutive weeks totaling $8.2 billion in withdrawals. A brief $197 million weekly inflow ending July 10 was immediately reversed by a $424.66 million single-day outflow on July 13. The ETH/BTC ratio climbed to 0.0297, up 6.1% week-over-week, forming its first sustained higher-low pattern since bottoming near 0.026 in early June.
The catalyst was macroeconomic. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on July 14 that the Consumer Price Index fell 0.4% month-over-month in June — the largest single-month decline since April 2020. Year-over-year inflation eased to 3.5%. Markets repriced Federal Reserve rate-hike probability for the July meeting downward immediately.
Bitcoin moved from approximately $62,000 to $64,900. Ethereum jumped 6% to $1,884. The difference in magnitude is attributable to beta: ETH carries higher rate sensitivity than BTC, amplifying moves when rate expectations shift. According to CoinGlass data, the move triggered $340 million in total crypto futures liquidations within 24 hours. Ethereum dominated the wipeout — $123.7 million in ETH liquidations, of which $112.18 million were short positions. The short-to-long liquidation ratio of roughly 10:1 on ETH indicates the market was heavily positioned for further downside.
By July 16, ETH had pulled back to $1,867, down 2.39% intraday, while BTC traded at $63,944. The initial spike faded, but the relative outperformance held.
The most notable structural shift is in fund flows, not spot price.
Ethereum ETFs:
Bitcoin ETFs:
The directional divergence is clear: institutional capital is rotating into ETH wrappers while exiting BTC wrappers, at least at the margin.
The ETH ETF inflow story has a concentration issue. BlackRock's ETHA is absorbing nearly all net flows. On July 14, ETHA took 99.9% of the day's total inflows. On July 16, it captured 84.2%.
Other issuers show mixed-to-negative flows:
ETHA's total AUM stands at approximately $4.4 billion. The Grayscale Mini Trust holds roughly $1.51 billion. Fidelity's FETH sits near $770 million. The staked variant, BlackRock's ETHB, holds approximately $465 million.
When one fund captures 85-100% of daily inflows, the signal is less about broad institutional conviction in ETH and more about a single allocator — or a narrow set of allocators routing through one product. The durability of the rotation depends on whether demand broadens across issuers.
BlackRock launched the iShares Staked Ethereum Trust (ETHB) on Nasdaq on March 12, 2026, following a joint SEC-CFTC interpretive release on March 17 that clarified protocol staking of non-security digital commodities does not trigger Securities Act registration requirements.
ETHB stakes 70-95% of its holdings via Coinbase Prime and distributes approximately 82% of staking rewards to investors monthly. The product generates a gross yield of 3.1-3.3% annualized, netting approximately 2.0-2.6% after fees. The fund charges a 0.25% sponsor fee, temporarily reduced to 0.12% on the first $2.5 billion in AUM.
At $465 million in AUM, ETHB remains small relative to ETHA's $4.4 billion. On July 16, ETHB took $4 million in inflows versus ETHA's $45.3 million. The staking wrapper has not yet attracted significant incremental capital beyond what the spot product already captures. Whether the ~2% net yield is sufficient to justify a separate allocation remains an open question for institutional allocators.
Robinhood Chain launched on July 1, 2026, as an Ethereum Layer 2. Within ten days, the network was processing 7.6 million transactions daily, approaching Base's 9.2 million on July 11. Daily DEX volume exceeded $800 million.
ETH serves as the sole gas token on Robinhood Chain. Every transaction requires ETH. Every batch of data posted to Ethereum mainnet requires ETH. Every user bridging assets onto the chain needs ETH.
However, the economic value flowing back to Ethereum's base layer is minimal. According to crypto.news, Robinhood Chain accrued $843,000 in gross revenue from users during its initial phase but paid just $1,600 to Ethereum mainnet for settlement — a 0.19% pass-through rate. This ratio reflects the broader L2 value-capture tension: L2s use Ethereum for security but retain the vast majority of fee revenue.
Further, Robinhood is currently subsidizing all gas fees for swaps, bridges, and perpetual futures trades — a 90-day promotional window that expires approximately in October 2026. The structural demand thesis depends on what happens when users start paying their own gas.
Ethereum DeFi TVL stands at approximately $41 billion as of July 15, up 6.44% over the prior 30 days. The network holds 53.1% of total DeFi TVL across all chains. However, 24-hour DEX trading volume on Ethereum fell 37% to $652 million on July 13, capturing 11.68% of cross-chain DEX volume against a $5.59 billion total.
USDT supply on Ethereum declined 4.51% to $76.52 billion over the 30-day period ending July 13 — a signal that stablecoin capital is migrating to other networks, even as locked capital in DeFi protocols grows.
The pattern suggests selective reallocation: capital is entering yield-generating protocols on Ethereum while active trading volume shifts to alternative chains and L2s.
The ETH/BTC ratio at 0.0297 is up from its June floor near 0.026 but remains well below its 2021 cycle high of approximately 0.08. The 6% weekly gain represents the first sustained higher-low formation in months, but one week of outperformance does not constitute a trend reversal.
The Altcoin Season Index, which measures how many of the top 50 altcoins outperformed Bitcoin over a trailing 90-day window, reads 46-49 — well below the 75 threshold that historically confirms broad rotation. Bitcoin dominance sits at 56-58.7%, above the ~55% level analysts generally identify as the trigger for sustained capital rotation into altcoins.
Fundstrat's Tom Lee flagged the ETH/BTC ratio on July 13 as a "signal of a revival of crypto" ahead of his WebX 2026 keynote in Tokyo, arguing that stablecoin growth, tokenized assets, and U.S. regulatory clarity could lift the ratio in H2 2026.
The data supports a narrower conclusion: ETH is outperforming BTC at the margin, driven by a CPI-triggered beta move and concentrated ETF inflows through one issuer. Whether this extends into a structural rotation depends on three conditions that remain unmet — sustained broadening of ETF inflows beyond BlackRock, Bitcoin dominance breaking below 55%, and the Altcoin Season Index crossing 75.
The week of July 10-16 produced Ethereum's strongest relative performance against Bitcoin in months, catalyzed by favorable macro data and a measurable shift in ETF fund flows. But the data tells a story of early-stage repositioning, not confirmed rotation. ETH ETF inflows are concentrated in a single product. Bitcoin dominance remains above the levels historically associated with broad altcoin rallies. The Altcoin Season Index sits well below confirmation threshold.
The economic case for Ethereum rests on a growing L2 ecosystem that generates transaction demand for ETH while returning minimal fee revenue to the base layer, staking yields that net approximately 2% after fees, and a DeFi TVL base of $41 billion that continues to grow even as active trading volume shifts elsewhere. These are real fundamentals, but they describe a slow-building structural thesis, not an imminent regime change.
For the rotation to hold, three things need to happen: ETF inflows must broaden beyond BlackRock, Bitcoin dominance must break below 55%, and the ETH/BTC ratio must clear and hold above 0.0286 — the level that has capped multiple recovery attempts. Until then, the data supports a tactical tilt, not a strategic shift.
