Decentralized exchange spot volume hit $614.27 billion in October 2026, an all-time monthly record, according to DefiLlama data. Centralized exchanges recorded $2.17 trillion over the same period, their highest since January 2025, pushing the DEX-to-CEX spot ratio to 19.84%. That ratio peaked at 24.14% in July 2026, when DEX absolute volume was lower but CEX volume fell faster.
The $614 billion is not distributed evenly. Three distinct chain ecosystems — Solana, Ethereum and its Layer 2 rollups, and the newly launched Robinhood Chain — account for the majority of spot DEX activity and represent fundamentally different architectural approaches to capturing trading flow. Solana leads on raw weekly throughput at $13.61 billion, followed by Ethereum mainnet at $8.1 billion and Base at $7.25 billion. Robinhood Chain, 100 days old, has already passed $100 billion in cumulative volume.
This report compares the three models by volume, fee economics, user composition, and capital efficiency to assess where DEX trading value actually accrues.
October 2026 DEX spot volume by chain, according to DefiLlama:
| Chain | 30-Day Volume | Weekly Volume | 24h Volume (Oct 17) | |-------|--------------|---------------|---------------------| | Solana | $77.4B | $13.61B | $1.84B | | Robinhood Chain | $52.0B | $6.50B | $942.7M | | Ethereum | $42.1B | $8.10B | $1.17B | | Base | $15.7B (bridge TVL) | $7.25B | — | | BNB Chain | — | — | — |
Top DEXs by October monthly volume: Uniswap led at $170.9 billion (up from $106.5 billion in September), PancakeSwap second at $101.9 billion (up from $79.8 billion), followed by Jupiter, Aerodrome, and Raydium.
Centralized exchanges hit $2.17 trillion in October, with Binance holding 28.5% spot market share, Coinbase overtaking Bybit for third place after a 41.4% surge to $63.6 billion, and top-tier exchanges collectively reaching 72% of total spot volume at $816 billion.
Solana posted the highest weekly DEX volume among all chains at $13.61 billion as of mid-October. Its 30-day volume reached $77.4 billion, making it the single largest chain for DEX spot activity.
Protocol Dominance. Jupiter handles approximately 95% of all DEX aggregator volume on Solana and over 50% of total chain DEX trading volume, according to DexTools. Raydium, which claims over 90% of direct AMM market share on Solana, recorded $8.0 billion in 30-day volume and $1.18 billion in TVL. Together, these two protocols route nearly all Solana trading activity.
Composition. Solana's volume splits across three segments: memecoin trading, which initially drove growth; tokenized equities, where Raydium passed $6 billion in cumulative stock volume in October; and stablecoin pairs. For the week of October 5–11, Solana ranked first in tokenized-equity DEX volume at $786.3 million, ahead of Robinhood Chain's $663.0 million.
Economics. Solana's low per-transaction cost (sub-cent fees) supports high-frequency, small-lot trading. This drives volume but compresses fee revenue per dollar traded. According to DefiLlama, Solana generated roughly $43.8 million in 30-day protocol fees across all DeFi applications, a fraction of its volume throughput.
Risk Factor. Solana's upcoming Alpenglow consensus switch, scheduled for October 21, introduces execution risk. The chain targets 150 millisecond finality, which would further strengthen its speed advantage — if the migration proceeds without incident.
Ethereum mainnet recorded $42.1 billion in 30-day DEX volume, with $1.17 billion in 24-hour activity as of October 17. However, mainnet's share of overall Ethereum ecosystem trading has dropped to approximately 5.7% of daily volume, according to research from 0xapriori's Ethereum reports.
L2 Migration. The real action is on rollups. Base overtook Arbitrum as the leading Ethereum L2 by bridge TVL — $15.73 billion versus $11.0 billion as of October 11. L2 transaction throughput reached 226.92 TPS, up 189% from Q1 2024, while mainnet gas usage fell 30%. EIP-4844 reduced L2 fees to $0.001–$0.05 per transaction.
Base as the Primary Beneficiary. Aerodrome, Base's dominant DEX, processed $15.7 billion in 30-day volume. Coinbase's tokenized stocks on Base reached $1.5 billion in DEX volume over 30 days, up 313% from the prior month. Of that, Aerodrome captured $1.4 billion while Uniswap V4 contributed $83.8 million. Aerodrome now handles approximately 76% of tokenized-stock trading volume on Base.
Uniswap's Cross-Chain Position. Uniswap recorded $170.9 billion across all chains in October, up 60.5% from September's $106.5 billion. Its position is not chain-specific: Uniswap captures 47% of stablecoin DEX volume across chains where it operates, according to AMBCrypto data. Uniswap V4, with its hub-and-spoke liquidity architecture, increasingly functions as an execution layer across Ethereum L2s.
Fragmentation Cost. Ethereum's multi-chain architecture introduces friction. Liquidity is split between mainnet, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, and others. Unlike Solana's single execution environment, traders on Ethereum's L2s must bridge between chains, adding cost and latency. This is a structural disadvantage for capital efficiency, partially offset by deeper aggregate liquidity pools.
Robinhood Chain launched its mainnet on July 1, 2026, and passed $100 billion in cumulative DEX volume within 100 days. Its 30-day volume of $52.0 billion places it second only to Solana among individual chains.
Composition. Tokenized equity trading is the chain's foundation. Cumulative tokenized-stock volume hit $15 billion, drawing 200,000 individual token holders. Perpetual futures added $25.4 billion over the past 30 days. The chain also supports memecoin trading.
Cooling Metrics. The initial growth trajectory is decelerating. Daily transactions fell 14.6% to 4.1 million, and daily active addresses declined 18% to 268,900 as of mid-October. Daily DEX volume of $942.7 million, while substantial, represents a decline from earlier peaks.
Brokerage-to-Chain Model. Robinhood Chain is architecturally distinct from both Solana and Ethereum. It operates as an Arbitrum Orbit L2, meaning it settles on Ethereum, but its user base is primarily drawn from Robinhood's existing 24.2 million funded accounts. This creates a retail distribution channel that neither Solana nor Ethereum's organic DeFi ecosystem can replicate. The chain's economic model routes trading fees through Robinhood's existing brokerage infrastructure.
Sustainability Question. At $52.0 billion in monthly volume with declining daily activity, the question is whether Robinhood Chain's brokerage funnel can sustain DeFi-native levels of activity once the launch premium fades. Its 40% transaction drop signals this test is underway.
The headline DEX-to-CEX spot ratio stood at 19.84% in October. However, this number requires decomposition.
In July 2026, the ratio peaked at 24.14% — but this occurred when absolute DEX spot volume fell 26% month-over-month to $130.8 billion, according to CryptoBriefing. DEX share rose because CEX volume fell faster. In October, both sides grew: DEXs reached $614.3 billion while CEXs hit $2.17 trillion. The ratio modestly declined from the July peak but on far larger absolute numbers.
Structural Drivers. According to analysis from Bex Research, the shift is not driven by DeFi power users migrating from Binance or Coinbase. It is driven by asset types that are available only on-chain: memecoins, newly issued tokens, and tokenized equities. These products are not listed on centralized exchanges and thus generate volume that is additive to DEXs without subtracting from CEXs.
CEX Concentration. Meanwhile, centralized exchanges are consolidating. In Q3 2026, the top 10 centralized spot exchanges handled $1.65 trillion, with Binance capturing 42.7% of that, up from 38.7% the prior quarter. Top-tier exchanges collectively reached 72% of total CEX spot volume at $816 billion. The exchange market is bifurcating: DEXs grow on novel asset types; CEXs concentrate on major trading pairs.
Volume does not equal revenue. Uniswap's $170.9 billion monthly volume generated meaningful fee revenue for liquidity providers, but the protocol itself is still testing its fee-switch mechanism — having burned $49 million in a ten-month trial, according to webthreepedia reporting. Aerodrome on Base has become a significant fee generator within its ecosystem. Jupiter on Solana captures aggregation fees but routes the bulk of swap fees to underlying AMMs like Raydium.
The economic value question is: for each dollar of DEX volume, how much accrues to (a) liquidity providers, (b) protocol treasuries, (c) chain validators, and (d) token holders?
On Solana, the answer leans heavily toward (a) and (c), with minimal protocol-level treasury capture. On Ethereum L2s, value fragments further among the L1 for settlement security, the L2 sequencer for ordering fees, the DEX protocol, and LPs. On Robinhood Chain, value routes back through the brokerage model — a fundamentally different extraction pattern where the chain operator captures value that in other ecosystems would be distributed among decentralized participants.
The DEX aggregator market has consolidated around intent-based execution models. KyberSwap holds approximately 31% of aggregator market share, CoW Swap approximately 22%, and 1inch approximately 15%, according to CryptoBriefing. On Solana, Jupiter captures 95% of aggregator flow.
Intent-based systems — where traders specify desired outcomes and professional solvers compete to fulfill them — now handle the majority of aggregator volume. CoW Protocol settles over $1 billion per week. 1inch's Fusion product handles more than half of 1inch's total volume.
This layer is significant because it determines which underlying DEXs receive order flow. The aggregator that routes the most volume effectively controls which liquidity pools — and which chains — accumulate fees. Jupiter's dominance on Solana and Uniswap's multi-chain position on Ethereum create self-reinforcing liquidity cycles: more routing means more LP deposits, which means better prices, which means more routing.
The $614 billion October record confirms that DEX spot trading has reached scale. The more important finding is that this volume concentrates in three distinct models with fundamentally different economic structures. Solana optimizes for speed and composability, attracting organic DeFi volume at compressed margins. Ethereum and its L2s offer deeper liquidity but fragment value across multiple layers. Robinhood Chain introduces a brokerage-distribution model that centralizes value capture in ways that contradict DeFi's original design assumptions.
For market participants, the question is not whether DEX volume will continue growing — that trajectory appears established. The question is which model most efficiently converts volume into sustainable economic value for its participants. At present, the data suggests each model's strength is also its constraint: Solana's low fees limit protocol-level revenue capture, Ethereum's fragmentation disperses value, and Robinhood Chain's centralized funnel creates dependency on a single distribution channel. None of the three has resolved this trade-off.
